Alan lives and works in Shaldon, Devon and has been drawing, painting and collecting art for many years. Having had a successful career as a senior academic, in 2014 he made the decision to work part time in order to devote more of his life to art, following which he became a full time painter.

His work is informed by the natural landscape, particularly the South West coastline with its ever-changing light conditions. Other landscapes that provide regular inspiration include those of rural Devon, North Mallorca and his native Wales. For him, painting is about helping the observer appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and to celebrate the environment that surrounds them.  But this beauty can sometimes be elusive, or not obvious at first glance, and it is this hidden element that he also seeks to explore.  This is particularly the case in his more abstract work, which takes influences from the landscape and art of the South West, in particular the work of Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson.

As Alan puts it: “Whatever the subject, my intention is always to share the sense of uplift that I feel when looking at the landscapes from which I draw my inspiration.  In this regard, I hope that my work reflects an emotional response to what I see”.

He is a member of the Torbay Guild of Artists and also a member of the Devon Artists’ Network (, and was part of the Devon Artists’ Network “Open Studios” event in 2016 and 2017.  His work has been shown at the South West Academy Open Exhibition, 2015, the “Flying Colours” Exhibition at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter in May 2016,  “In Nature’s Colours” Exhibition, 2016, the Teignwich Village Artists’ Exhibition, 2015 & 2016, the North St Gallery (Ashburton) December 2016 Exhibition, the Mason-Laurence Gallery at Dartington, 2017, The Observatory Exhibition, University of Exeter in 2017, The Artizan Gallery “Power of Three” Exhibition, August 2017, and the “Tor to Shore” Exhibition, Birdwood House Totnes, August 2018.  His work has also been featured in Devon Life magazine.
